The cogeneration system installed at the Novotel, Newcastle Beach is a system which uses one source of energy (natural gas) to generate both electrical energy and thermal energy. In general terms, the gas is burned in a reciprocating engine which drives an electrical generator and the waste heat recovered from this process is used for the heating of domestic hot water.
The waste heat recovered from the engine shall run through a heat exchanger to provide heating to the domestic hot water system.
This cogeneration system is designed to operate year round, during the hours of 7am-10pm, Monday – Friday. The system shall operate as required to meet the available demand. The power is provided to operate the hotel house service. The thermal energy is utilised to provide heating to the domestic hot water system. This mode also invovles the operation of boilers to create hot water to supply the domestic hot water system and this shall be used during engine maintenance periodes etc.
